Steve McQueen

October 12th, 2013

Steve McQueen was true Hollywood cool. An icon of 1960’s cinema with lead roles in movies such as Bullitt, The Getaway and The Thomas Crown Affair.  He was and still is “The king of cool”.  With his natural sense of style he transformed classic pieces of clothing into must have wardrobe essentials. Blue jeans, button down oxfords, chambray shirts and classic chinos, Steve McQueen’s timeless style is a quintessential source of inspiration to the California Tailor line. By taking menswear staples and giving them a live fast, die young attitude he secured his place as a true icon of style.

Steve McQueen. A Hollywood pretty boy.

Audrey Hepburn

September 28th, 2013

It was Breakfast at Tiffany’s and that famous little black dress that made Audrey Hepburn a star of Hollywood’s golden age. However at California Tailor, I love this more effortless shot of Audrey wearing a classic white shirt.  The photo was taken by Hollywood photographer Mark Shaw as part of a portrait series for Life magazine during the 1950’s.

Natural and effortless, this is my favorite Audrey snap.

The Beverly Hills Hotel

September 10th, 2013

The Beverly Hills Hotel has hosted all of Hollywood in it’s 100 year history. From Marilyn Monroe to the Beatles the famous pink and green hotel has always been at the center of Hollywood life. For me it’s the famous pool where my favorite part of the hotels history was captured.

In the spring of 1977 photographer Terry O Neill captured Faye Dunaway taking the Beverly Hills Hotel breakfast by the pool in “dazed confusion”, the morning after winning her Oscar for best actress.  With a pot of English tea on the table, (along side her Oscar) the photo has the perfect mix of Hollywood Glamor and old school charm that the Beverly Hills Hotel is so famous for.

David Hockney

August 18th, 2013

Today I’m celebrating the British artist David Hockney and one of my favorite paintings, A Bigger Splash. David Hockney has had a long time love affair with Hollywood and California. He famously said his childhood passion for the movies made him feel like he was raised in both England and Hollywood. He was drawn to the light and heat of California and finally moved from London to Los Angeles after attending the Royal Collage of Art in London during the early sixties.

The swimming pools of Los Angeles were his favorite subject. Iconic works such as A Bigger Splash saw him explore new ways of painting and cemented his reputation as an international artist. With A Bigger Splash, David Hockney depicts a typical California day. Warm and sunny, blue skies above with the iconic palm trees in the distance. A true celebration of California life seen through the artistic eye of  one of England’s greatest living painters.

A Bigger Splash, 1967 is currently on display at London’s Tate Britain Gallery.

The Gucci loafer has turned 60!   To celebrate, the Italian label has released the 1953 collection.  The famous shoe which has been a Hollywood favorite for years is now slimmer and brighter in an array of colours but still thankfully features the iconic horse bit.  I’m loving the GucciForever Now” icons of heritage advertising campaign.  Perfectly classic!

Still made in Italy, my favorite is the canvas print flora edition.  The loafer adds a tomboy touch to your wardrobe and goes with anything, from jeans and a shirt to your favorite black dress.

60 years a classic.   I love them!
